Cardinal Softball Set For Midweek Games Against No. 15 Baylor, ULM

WACO, TX – The University of the Incarnate Word Softball team is set for a pair of midweek games against both No. 15 Baylor and University of Louisiana-Monroe. On Tuesday, the Cardinals face Baylor at 3p.m. before traveling to Louisiana to take on ULM at 5p.m. on Wednesday.
 
The Cardinal File
 
     Freshman Delaney Guzman hit her first collegiate home run in the finale of the Cardinals' three-game conference opening series against Sam Houston, but UIW was swept by the Bearkats by scores of 3-0, 10-0, and 4-2. Kellen Robles played tremendous defense in the finale, finishing with nine putouts in left field, including some SportsCenter Top Play-like catches. The Cardinals are currently on a 12-game losing streak, the longest stretch since the 2015 team lost 13 straight from Feb. 28-March 28.

     On the season, Danielle Ramirez leads the Cardinals with a .375 batting average, followed by Marcela Lopez with .294. Mikaela Flores, who is batting .254, leads the team with 10 RBI and is one of four Cardinals to hit a home run. Joanna Valencia pitched valiently in two games against SHSU and leads the pitching staff with a 4.45 ERA with 13 strikeouts. Sarah Leal leads the squad with 26 strikeouts.
 
Scouting the Opposition
 
     The 15th-ranked team in the nation, Baylor, last defeated Louisiana-Lafayette, 5-4, on March 9. The Bears swept a doubleheader from SLC's own Northwestern State, 3-1 in eight innings and 5-0.

     The Bears have a pair of .400 hitters in Kyla Walker (.443) and Lindse Cargill (.419). In the circle, Kelsee Selman is 11-2 with a 1.49 ERA and 58 strikeouts.

     ULM went 1-2 in a three-game series at UT Arlington over the weekend, winning the first game, 3-0, but losing the last two by scores of 9-3 and 2-1.
     The Warhawks also have two .400 hitters in Sydney McKay (.432) and Jayden Mount (.412). Melanie Coyne has seen the brunt of the work in the circle and is 9-5 with a 1.81 ERA and 68 strikeouts.
