SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's tennis team split a pair of matches against Trinity and St. Edwards at the Clarence Mabry Tennis Center Saturday. The Cardinals beat Trinity 4-3 and dropped the match against St. Edwards 4-1.

In the cold morning match against the Tigers, the Cardinals (2-1) lost the doubles point, but fought back in singles. Needing four singles matches to get the win, UIW answered with four victories from the #1 Matea Zemunik, #3 Sarah Savedra,#5 Alejandra Tamayo, and #6 Maria Batchinsky.

Zemunik and Rachel Sadiq were the only Cardinals to win their doubles match, with a 6-4 result at the #1 spot.

The cold didn't go away for the second match, but both teams were ready to play. Zemunik and Sadiq got the Cardinals off to a great start in doubles with a 6-0 win in the #1 spot, but the other two doubles matches went the Hilltopper's way, to grab the early 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals once again needed four victories in singles for the victory, but this time they fell just short. Tamayo won her match to start the comeback, but the Hilltoppers followed with three wins to end the match early. The last two matches were stopped before they ended. In those matches, Zemunik led 7-5, 4-3 at #1, and Savedra also led 6-4, 5-4 at #4.  

The Cardinals will play a third match in two days, as they make the short drive to UTSA to face the Roadrunners, tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
