SAN ANTONIO –
Tyler Lesley tossed five strong innings but ended the night with a no-decision, as the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team dropped game one against Central Michigan 5-2 Friday night at Sullivan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals (3-3) were outhit 12-5, but held a 2-1 lead until the sixth inning, thanks in part to Lesley's solid outing.
Mark Whitehead led off the bottom of the first inning with a first pitch single, and then came around to score to grab an early 1-0 lead. The Chippewas (2-2) tied it in the third inning on a close play at the plate. Alex Borglin tripled to start the inning, and then scored on a squeeze play. Lesley looked to have thrown Borglin out at the plate, but the ball dropped out of the catcher's glove.
Then in the sixth inning, Reed Adams singled down the right field line to bring in two runs, and give Central Michigan a 3-2 lead.
Starting pitcher Pat Leatherman, and Colton Bradley, kept the Cardinal bats quiet after the fourth inning, not allowing another run to score. CMU scored two insurance runs in the top of the ninth, and ultimately gave Leatherman the win, and Bradley the save—both their season's first.
Ramon Salazar picked up the loss for UIW, while
Austin Preiss came in to face two batters in the ninth, and retired both of them.
LEADERS
Whitehead collected two hits, stole a base and scored a run, while
David Anaya,
Kyler Genenbacher and

For the Chippewas, Zach Gilles and Reed each connected with three hits, while Jason Sullivan ended the night with three RBI.
