SAN ANTONIO –
Bernie Martinez completed six scoreless innings as the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team bounced back from a 25-5 loss to Central Michigan in game one, to take game two 10-4 on Saturday at Sullivan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In game one, the Cardinals (4-4) committed five errors and allowed an 11-run inning and 8-run inning, that helped the Chippewas (3-3) score 25 runs on 23 hits. The top three hitters in the lineup combined for nine hits and 12 RBI.
For the Cardinals,
Mark Whitehead collected three RBI, a double and a run, while
Eddy Gonzalez had two hits, including a double, and scored twice.
Tanner White was 1-for-1, with two runs scored and three walks.
Michael Brettell earned the win to go to 1-0, while
Cody Richey picked up the loss after 4.1 innings of work.
Game two was a whole different story. Both starting pitchers did a good job of putting up zeros on the board, through the sixth inning. For the Chippewas' Dazon Cole though, a five run third inning plagued his good outing. Four of those runs were unearned, as the second baseman missed a grounball that would have been the third out of the inning.
In that third inning, E. Gonzalez,
Garrett Terrell,
Bryce Shepherd, and R. Gonzalez all singled in runs. Also, with runners on first and third, the Cardinals executed a double steal perfectly, which led to Terrell scoring from third on the throw to second base.
Martinez kept Central Michigan in check, as he tossed six scoreless innings, allowing three hits, and striking out five. After he left the ballgame, CMU scored two runs in the seventh to cut the lead to 5-2.
Then in the bottom of the seventh, CMU decided to intentionally walk
Lee Thomas to face Terrell and it backfired. Terrell hit a bases-clearing triple , and Shepherd followed with a long sacrifice fly to centerfield to drive in Terrell and give UIW four insurance runs, making it 9-2. The Cardinals added one run in the eighth, and the Chippewas scored two in the ninth, but
Tyler Miller induced a groundout to the shortstop to strand two runners on base and to secure the doubleheader split.
Martinez earned the 'W' for the Cardinals to improve to 1-0 and lowered his ERA to 0.79 on the year. Dazon Cole was charged with the loss after allowing 5 runs (one earned) in six innings and striking out four.
LEADERS
In game two, E. Gonzalez had three hits, including his second double of the day, two runs and an RBI. Terrell finished with two hits, four RBI and two runs. Shepherd drove in two runs and scored one, while Whitehead added another hit and a run.
For the Chippewas in game two, Alex Borglin, Daniel Robinson and Jason Sullivan all collected two hits apiece, and Robinson added two RBI in the loss.
