SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team 10-run ruled Prairie View A&M 11-1 at Sullivan Field Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals (3-2) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning, and never looked back.
Lee Thomas both drove in a run each, and
Tanner White made it 5-0 with a two-run single to centerfield.
The Panthers (1-4) got a run back in the second when Tyrone Thomas drove in Corbin Jamison with a double to right center, but then the UIW bullpen would quiet them down.
Luke Taggart started the game for UIW and pitched a great game for the Cardinals. He only gave up one run on five hits, one walk and struck out seven in his first collegiate start.
In the 5
th inning,
Ryan Gonzalez doubled to left field to drive in another run, and then Thomas added another in the seventh with his first homerun of the season.
Garret Cooper,
Cody Allen, and
Jesse Borden combined to throw three scoreless innings in relief to preserve the victory.
The Cardinals weren't satisfied with a 7-1 lead and put up four more in the bottom of the eighth, ending the game early due to the 10-run rule.
Ryan Gonzalez hit a hard groundball through the left side of the infield that drove in the winning run, and due to the run-rule, his second RBI was taken away. The game automatically stopped when it got to 11-1, even though another run scored on the play.

Lee Thomas led the Cardinals' offense with two hits, three RBI, two runs and a homerun.
Ray Swyers added three hits and two runs, and both

Taggart earned the win for UIW, while Cameron Cooper took the loss for the Panthers, after giving up five runs in 0.2 innings. Centerfielder Corbin Jamison led the Panthers with three hits and a run scored.
