Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RUSTON, LA – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team started the 2017 campaign at the Louisiana Tech Invitational on Friday afternoon. In the first game of the day against the host school, Louisiana Tech, the Cardinals (0-2) lost in a pitchers dual 1-0. In the nightcap, UIW lost 9-1 to Missouri State to finish the doubleheader.

CARDINALS OPEN AGAINST LOUISIANA TECH

Sarah Leal pitched a fantastic game for the Cardinals in the season opener allowing just one earned run on three hits while pitching the complete six innings. However, Louisiana Tech starting pitcher Preslee Gallaway, who also pitched a complete game allowing only two hits in seven innings, held the UIW offense in check.

The only run of the game was scored in the sixth inning when Jaz Crowder led off the inning with a double to left field and she later scored on a Morgan Turkoly single to right field.

For the Cardinals at the plate, Danielle Ramirez and Kristin Hebert collected the only two hits of the ballgame for UIW and the team left three runners on base while striking out four times.

UIW OFFENSE STRUGGLES AGAINST MISSOURI STATE

Offense was once again hard to come by for the Cardinals against Missouri State on Friday night as the team only produced one run on six hits in the game. Bridget Stein started in the pitching circle for UIW and she went 2.1 innings allowing four runs, two earned, on four hits.

The Bears opened the scoring in the second inning after a throwing error on UIW allowed a run to score. Later in the second, another unearned run would cross the plate on a sacrifice fly from Kaitlin Beason to make the score 2-0.

Missouri State added two runs in the third on a two run homer by Mary Stephens, and they tacked on three more in the fifth. The Cardinals were able to score their first run of the season in the fifth after Christy Trevino grounded out scoring Marcela Lopez. The Bears finished the scoring in the sixth when Stephens hit her second two run homer of the day.

Trevino led the Cardinals with two hits and an RBI while Mikaela Flores and Lacie Stevens also added a hit. Jessica Rodriguez finished the game in the pitching circle and allowed four earned runs on six hits in 3.2 innings of work.
