HUNTSVILLE,Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team put up a good fight, but was unable to outlast Conference leader Sam Houston State University. The Bearkats claimed a four set victory to remain number one in the conference and extend their winning streak.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Madison Wallace opened the match with a kill to put Sam Houston on the scoreboard first.
Bryaunea Hall struck back for the Cardinals to get the set going with a fair 1-1 start. The Bearkats soon took the lead and maintained it through the rest of the set. UIW tallied 13 kills and four errors for a .243 attacking percentage while Sam Houston registered 18 kills and six errors for a .273 attacking percentage to take set one 25-20.
The second started off in favor of the Cardinals as the squad scored four straight points. The turning point occurred win the Bearkats got their attack going for a nine point streak to take advantage of the set 17-11. The second ended much like the first with Sam Houston on top 25-20.
Set three was a long battle for both teams, but UIW beat the conference leaders 30-28 to keep the match alive. The Cardinals had 19 kills and five errors to be more efficient than the Bearkats who tallied 17 kills and nine errors.
Autumn Lockley led the third with seven kills.
UIW struggled to get their attack going during set four. As a result, Sam Houston won the set 25-15 for a match win. The Cardinals totaled 55 kills for the night while the Bearkats had 65.
LEADERS
Autumn Lockley led the team with 17 kills and 16 digs.
Julia Monday followed with 15 kills and two blocks.
Madison Williams paced the team with 40 assists. Defensively,
Madelynn Miller tallied 17 digs and
Bryaunea Hall registered five blocks.
Jordyn Vaughn and Taylor Cunningham led the Bearkats with 25 and 13 kills respectively.
UP NEXT
The Cardinals will continue competition on the road in Abilene, Texas. UIW is schedule to play Abilene Christian in the Moody Coliseum at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 21.
