Box Score ABILENE, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team claimed an opening set win against Abilene Christian University, but was unable to keep the momentum going through the rest of the match. As a result, the Cardinals suffered a four set defeat and are now 3-8 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UIW trailed during set one until a kill by
Maddie Slaughter got the Cardinal attack going for six straight points to even the score 15-15. The squad eventually went on to take the lead and close the set 25-21. UIW registered 14 kills and six errors while the Wildcats struggled with 11 kills and nine errors.
The Cardinals were up by two points for a slight advantage over their opponents at the beginning of the second. Abilene Christian went on a six point streak to take control of the set and cause UIW to trail 12-7. The Cardinals could not get their attack going in time so the Wildcats took set two 25-16 to tie the match 1-1.
Much like the second, UIW led through the third but could not maintain its lead. The Wildcats capitalized on six consecutive Cardinal errors to get ahead 23-18. Abilene Christian tallied 10 kills and seven errors, but was able to get a 25-20 victory over UIW to lead the match 2-1.
Set four ended in a 25-17 success and match win for the Wildcats. The Cardinals battled it out in the beginning of the set but quickly found themselves behind and unable to catch up. UIW finished the match with 44 kills as a team while Abilene Christian totaled 52.
LEADERS
Sarea Alexander led with 12 kills and a .348 attacking percentage. She also registered three blocks for the Cardinal defense.
Autumn Lockley finished off the night with 12 kills, 10 digs, and four blocks.
Madison Williams paced the team with 40 assists and Madelyn Miller tallied 16 digs.
Lauren Walker contributed 13 kills to Wildcat victory and Marybeth Sandercox followed with 12.

UIW will host Houston Baptist University in the McDermott Center on Saturday October 28 at 11 a.m.
