Trent Brittain tossed three touchdowns in Saturday's Hall of Fame Home-Opener, but the University of the Incarnate Word was unable to generate any ground game, falling to Texas A&M-Kingsville, 31-22, at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.
The Javelinas (1-0) held the Cardinals (0-1) to -26 yards rushing, and outgained UIW 406 yards to 237 yards overall.
Myles Carr connected with Jordan Thomas on a 57-yard pass to open the scoring and TAMUK never trailed, holding off Incarnate Word before pulling away in the second half.
The Cardinals answered each of the Javelinas' first-half touchdowns with a score of their own, tying the ballgame at 14 apiece, but a muffed snap on a UIW punt was recovered by TAMUK. The Javelinas converted the turnover into a last-second field goal and took a 17-14 advantage into the break.
With 1:10 remaining in the third quarter, Carr found Thomas for an 11-yard strike, pushing the TAMUK lead to 10.
Carr hit Chris Cooper with a two-yard pass in the fourth, extending the Javelinas advantage to 31-14 at the 11:26 mark.
Brittain connected with
Jordan Hicks on a 77-yard bomb with 7:38 remaining in the contest, but the Cardinals were unable to climb their way back.
Brittain finished the night with 294 passing yards. Hicks tallied 115 receiving yards on five receptions, while Broderi Reeves paced the squad with 14 yards on 21 carries.
Joel Higgins led the Incarnate Word defense with nine tackles (three solo).
Alex Jenkins had 3.5 tackles-for-loss, a sack and a forced fumble.
Daryl Irby forced one fumble and registered a sack, while totaling five tackles.
Quandre Washington recovered one fumble, which he returned for 12 yards.
Incarnate Word has a quick turnaround, heading to Natchitoches, La. for a Thursday night battle against Northwestern St. at 6 p.m.
