Bearkats Edge Cardinals

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's tennis team came up four points short of winning their first Southland Conference match on Saturday against Sam Houston State at the Mabry Tennis Center.

The Bearkats ended up winning the match, 5-2, but not before the Cardinals gave it a good run.  SHSU earned a hard-earned point in doubles.  UIW's #2 duo of Sarah Savedra and Taryn Strahl continued their strong play this season and won, 7-5.  The Bearkat duo of Caitlyn Mitchell and Maddie Mortimore won at #3 doubles, 6-3 and set the stage for the crucial #1 match.  Mila Milanovic and Fabienne Gettwart outlasted the Cardinals team of Rachel Sadiq and Matea Zemunic, 7-6 (10-8) in the tie-break.

Sam Houston State quickly put the match away by winning at #1, #5 and #4 singles.  Zemunik won her match at #2 singles for the Cardinals 7-6, 7-5 and Strahl won a tough three-setter over Ema Barkovic at #3 singles.  The #6 singles match proved to be the closest of the day.  Clarisa Salinas won the first set for UIW, 6-3, but then Mitchell responded with a 6-4 win in the second set.  The third set was played as a 10-point super set that Mitchell pulled out 13-11 to win.

The Cardinals are back in action on April 1 at home against Abilene Christian at 12 p.m.
