THIBODAUX, LOUISIANA – The University of the Incarnate Word women's tennis team could not break their eight match losing funk over the course of the weekend. UIW dropped two matches on the road against Southland Conference rivals Nicholls, 4-3 and McNeese State, 6-1.
On Saturday morning at Nicholls, the Cardinals (2-14, 0-6) lost the doubles point even though
Taryn Strahl (San Antonio/Churchill HS) and
Sarah Savedra (El Paso/El Paso HS) dominated their #2 match, 6-1. Strahl was the only Cardinal to come out with two wins as she also won her #3 singles match against Isla Brock in three sets. In the #2 singles position,
Matea Zemunik (Jesenice, Croatia/Marko Marulic) beat out Julia Melendez 7-5, 6-3.
Clarisa Salinas (Plano/Lovejoy HS) improved to 2-4 at the #6 position with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 victory.
McNeese State (12-4, 5-0) cut off the Cardinals from the beginning by quickly taking the doubles point with a defeat of the top duo,
Rachel Sadiq (Frisco/Frisco HS) and Zemunik, 6-1, and then they took a 6-3 decision over
Antea Dedic (Split, Croatia/ Opca Gimnazija) and Salinas at the #3 spot. Zemunik earned the only point for Incarnate Word at #2 singles 6-1, 6-3.
Incarnate Word will return home to face the Lamar Cardinals on Friday at 11 a.m. Southland Conference competition will continue against Sam Houston State on Saturday at 10 a.m.
