Box Score SAN MARCOS, Texas – In front of 22,845 fans at Bobcat Stadium, the University of the Incarnate Word football team maintained a lead through the first 20 minutes of action, but Texas State punched back in the second quarter and cruised to a 48-17 victory on Saturday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals (1-3, 1-2 SLC) completely controlled the opening frame as
Trent Brittain started 6-for-6 and
Broderick Reeves racked up 57 yards on the ground, compared to just 16 by the Bobcats (1-2). A 47-yard touchdown scamper by Reeves at the 9:36 mark gave UIW A 7-0 advantage and the Cardinals defense answered the bell. UIW forced Texas State into three consecutive punts before blocking a Bobcat field goal attempt at the end of the period.
The momentum shifted dramatically in the second quarter as Texas State found the end zone on all three of its possessions and held the Cardinals to a lone field goal. UIW allowed only 68 yards in the first, but yielded 276 to the Bobcats in the second.
Texas State took a 21-10 lead into the break.
The Bobcats pulled away in the third quarter, tacking on two additional touchdowns to secure a 34-10 advantage.
The Cardinals found the end zone on a 71-yard sprint by
Desmond Hite in the fourth, but Texas State piled on with two touchdowns of their own, including a 65-yard bomb with just 42 seconds remaining in the contest.

OVERALL THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH LARRY KENNAN
"I thought we had a good effort. We didn't know how good they were, and I don't think they knew how good they were. We're a decent team, and we could not stop them. We couldn't convert on third down for a while. Trent [Brittain] being sick did not help us. He was really sick. We were impressed with Texas State's defense and offense, particularly their offense."
KENNAN ON THE DEFENSIVE EFFORT
"We tackled them pretty well. The problem was, we gave up a lot of big plays. They had 670 yards of total offense. They're a good football team. They had a quarterback who is really good and some really good receivers."
