HOUSTON, TEXAS – One week after winning the season-opening golf tournament of the year, University of the Incarnate Word senior
Scott Shaw (San Antonio/Churchill HS) had to settle for runner-up honors as the HBU Husky Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday. (
Results)
Shaw entered the final round in third place, but moved up to second after a solid round of 2-over par on the 6,931-yard, par-71 El Dorado Course at the Quail Valley Golf Club. It was the first round this season that he has shot that was over par. He finished the tournament at 2-under par for 54 holes trailing University of Houston's Michael Perras who posted an 8-under par for the tournament.
Despite Shaw's high placement, the Cardinals were only able to finish in fifth place as a team. They fired rounds of 288-297-297 to finish with 882 strokes overall. Houston won the team title going away with a 285-282-284=851 total. UT Rio Grande Valley (873) finished in second place and they were followed by Florida Atlantic (874), host Houston Baptist (875), UIW (882), Nicholls (894), New Orleans (894), St. Thomas (907) and Texas Southern (919).
For the Cardinals,
Cole Solis (San Antonio/The Episcopal School of Texas) finished in a tie for ninth place with a 72-72-75=219 total. Unfortunately, he played the tournament as a medalist only.
Caden Wylie (Boerne/Boerne HS) and
Chase Rios each fired 3-over par 74's in the final round. Wylie finished in 20th place while Rios was 23rd overall.
The Cardinals are now off for nearly a month before they make a trip to Las Cruces, NM for the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico State on October 19-20.
