HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team makes the relatively short trip to Southland Conference rival Sam Houston State for a scheduled three-game series this weekend at Don Sanders Stadium.
Action will begin at 1 p.m. Friday with the goal of playing a doubleheader that day. The third game will be played if weather permits either Saturday or Sunday.
The Cardinals (11-20, 2-10) have hit a skid losing their last four games, but hope to get back on the winning track against the Bearkats (15-19, 8-7). UIW is hitting .245 as a team. First baseman
Ethan McGill (Penn Valley, CA/Nevada Union HS) leads the team with a .308 batting average and 11 doubles.
Matt Morris (Scottsdale/Saguaro HS) has been the top power hitter on the team with a .289 batting average, .479 slugging percentage and 15 extra-base hits.
UIW is expected to go with a starting rotation of
Geno Encina (San Antonio/Brandeis HS),
Garret Cooper (Round Rock/McNeil HS) and
Brandon Anderson (Cheyenne, WY/Cheyenne Central HS). Encina is 1-2 with a 3.27 ERA in 22.0 innings while Cooper is 4-3 with a 3.51 ERA and Anderson is 1-4 with a 4.38 ERA.
The Bearkats are expected to throw Andrew Godail (1-4, 2.53 ERA), Logan Boyd (3-3, 3.18) and Sam Odoam (1-4, 5.27). Spence Rahm and Zach Smith are the top two hitters on the team.
