WACO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team will try to end a seven-game losing streak on Tuesday when they travel to Baylor University for a 6:35 p.m. start at Baylor Ballpark.
The Cardinals (11-23) have struggled in recent weeks winning just two of their last 12 games. During the losing streak the team has failed to score more than five runs in a game. They are hitting .242 as a team this year and are averaging 4.1 runs per game.
Christian Divelbiss (Yuba City, CA/Yuba City HS) leads the team with a .300 batting average and has 16 RBI's in 80 at bats.
Ethan McGill (Penn Valley, CA/Nevada Union HS) and
Matt Morris (Scottsdale, AZ/Saguaro HS) have been the top offensive producers for the team. McGill is hitting .297 with 11 doubles and 14 RBI's while Morris has a .285 batting average and a team high .462 slugging percentage.
The UIW pitching staff has a 5.78 team earned run average and teams are hitting .309 against them.
Garret Cooper (Round Rock/McNeil HS) has been the team's top pitcher this year with a 4-4 record and a 3.86 ERA.
Kris Looper (Wharton/Wharton HS) is expected to make the start against Baylor. He is 0-3 with a 6.82 ERA in 30.1 innings of work.
The Bears (13-22) are 11-8 at home this year and they are 4-8 in the Big 12. The team is hitting .258 and is averaging 4.1 runs per game. Logan Brown is the team's top offensive player. He is hitting .304 with 23 runs, six doubles, 15 RBI's and 15 stolen bases. The pitching staff has a 5.25 ERA and teams are hitting .289 against them. Daniel Castano has been the team's best pitcher with a 2-4 record and a 3.33 ERA in 51.1 innings of work. Sean Spicer is 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA and four saves out of the bullpen.
This is the second straight season that the Cardinals have traveled to Baylor. Last year, the Bears won a pair of games from UIW, 5-2 and 4-3. The game can be heard online at
