Cardinals Win in Extra Innings

EDINBURG, TEXAS – Tanner Wall's (San Antonio/Johnsons HS) three RBI's led the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team to a non-conference 7-3 win in 11 innings against UT-Pan American on Tuesday afternoon in Edinburg.

The Cardinals (11-16) took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but a 2-out, 2-run triple by Logan Landon tied the game and sent it into extra innings.

Neither team scored in the first extra frame, but in the 11th inning, Wall singled to right field with the bases loaded to give UIW a 5-3 lead. Blake Woosley (Corvallis, OR/Philomath HS) then added a couple of insurance runs with a 2-RBI single to left field to make it 7-3.

Matthew Decker (Hickory Creek/Lake Dallas HS) pitched both extra frames and threw his second scoreless inning of the night in the 11th, ending the game on a 4-6-3 double play.  Decker grabbed the win for the Cardinals with two innings of work, allowing only one hit and no runs.

Kris Looper (Wharton/Wharton HS) started on the mound for the Cardinals going six innings, scattering six hits, one run (unearned) and four walks while striking out one, but he got a no-decision.  Andrew Padron took the loss for the Broncs after allowing four runs on five hits in three innings.

Mark Whitehead (San Antonio/Johnson HS), Austin Hoffman (Goodyear, AZ/Millenium HS) and Wall all collected two hits apiece, while Hoffman hit a solo home run, his second of the season, in the second inning.  Colton Besett (Cedar Park/Vista Ridge HS) also drove in a run in the second inning with a single.

Correy Davis and Cole Loncar combined to go 6-for-11 at the top of the lineup for the Broncs (11-15), while the rest of the team finished 4-for-29.

The Cardinals are back on the road this weekend as they travel to Nichols to face the Colonels in a Southland Conference three-game series starting Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
