LAKE CHARLES, LOUISIANA – McNeese State University finished the three-game sweep of the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team with a 12-1 run-rule victory in seven innings on Sunday at Cowboy Diamond.
Trent Fontenot picked up the win for the Cowboys (14-6, 5-1) going five strong innings of one run baseball, allowing three hits, walking three and striking out six. Jacob Williams finished the game off with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts.
The Cowboys hit two home runs, making it five home runs in the last two games and out-hit the Cardinals, 14-4. Lucas Quary hit both home runs on the day and finished the afternoon with six RBI and two runs scored. James Cantu had a 3-for-3 day, with a walk, two runs scored and two batted in.
The Cardinals (7-13, 1-5) were held to four hits and one run in the seven innings and dropped their fourth straight game.
Brance Kahle (Colleyville/Grapevine Faith HS) provided all the offense for UIW with a solo home run. It was his first home run of the season.
Garret Cooper (Round Rock/McNeil HS) suffered his second loss of the season, going three innings and giving up eight runs on eight hits.
Jesse Hoover (Marion/Marion HS),
Ethan McGill (Penn Valley, CA/Nevada Union HS) and Kahle all finished 1-for-2 and
Austin Hoffman (Goodyear, AZ/Millenium HS) added the only other hit.
The Cardinals are off until they start a three-game non-conference series against Prairie View A&M at home on Friday at 6:30.
