Box Score BEAUMONT, TEXAS – A 20-5 run early in the second half by the Lamar University men's basketball team cracked open a tight contest on Saturday night against visiting University of the Incarnate Word. Lamar ended up winning 79-66 at the Montagne Center.
Lamar's (15-13, 9-7) victory evened up the season series with UIW (17-8, 9-6) with both teams winning on their home courts. The game was close for the first 22 minutes with LU taking a 37-33 lead into halftime and it was only 40-37 when Lamar went on a 20-5 run to take control of the game. They ended up leading by as many as 21 points after a three-pointer by Anthony Holliday midway through the half before UIW made the game a little closer at the end.
Incarnate Word shot 39.6 percent from the field, made 6-of-14 from three-point range and they went 22-of-34 from the foul line. Lamar shot 48.1 percent from the field, made 8-of-16 from three-point range and they made 21-of-27 at the foul line. The biggest difference in the game was Lamar's dominance on the glass. They pulled down 43 rebounds, including 15 on the offensive end while UIW finished with only 22 rebounds.
UIW had three players score in double figures.
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) led the team with 19 points and grabbed five rebounds while
Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) had 14 points on just five shot attempts.
Jontrell Walker (Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) chipped in with 12 points.
Lamar was led by Donovan Ross who had an outstanding game with 22 points and eight rebounds. Holliday and Quan Jones each scored 12 points while Tyran de Lattibeaudiere added eight points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Dontavious Sears knocked down four three-pointers and scored 14 points off the bench.
UIW is back in action on Monday night at Stephen F. Austin with tip off scheduled for 7 p.m.
