Cardinals Defense Leads to Win

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball used a strong defense to overrun visiting Schreiner University, 73-49 and improve to 2-0 at the McDermott Center this year.

The Cardinals (2-0) forced 21 turnovers and limited the Mountaineers (0-1) to 31.6 percent shooting from the field.  Schreiner led in the early going of the game, but UIW took the lead for good on a Jontrell Walker (Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) three-pointer with 13:55 remaining in the first half.  The home team pushed the lead to double figures after another Walker three-pointer with 5:25 to play in the half.  The Cardinals held a 37-25 lead at halftime.

Incarnate Word bolted out of the gates in the second half behind the play of senior point guard Mitchell Badillo (Houston/Cy Falls HS) who scored six points and had three steals in a 16-2 run.  The Cardinals led 53-27 just six minutes into the second half and cruised to the win.  They led by as many as 33 points before the Mountaineers closed the game on a 10-1 run.

The Cardinals shot 44.6 percent from the field, made 7-of-22 from three-point range and were 16-of25 from the charity stripe.  Sam Burmeister (San Antonio/Churchill HS) led the team with 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals.  Badillo and Walker each had 12 points and five rebounds while Badillo added four steals.  The team had 14 assists, 16 steals and 12 turnovers.

The Mountaineers made 4-of-18 from three-point range and were 9-for-13 at the foul line.  They did not have anyone score in double figures, but Christian Pena led the team with seven points and nine rebounds.  Phillip Kee also had nine rebounds.  Schreiner had three more rebounds than the Cardinals.
