Cardinals Win The Classic at The Tribute

THE COLONY, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's golf team went wire-to-wire en route to winning The Classic at The Tribute golf tournament hosted by Texas A&M-Commerce at The Tribute Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday. (Results)

The Cardinals held a two-stroke lead after the first round of the tournament and then fired a school-record 10-under par 278 to hold off Cameron.  UIW finished at 16-under par for the tournament while Cameron finished at 13-under par.

All four scoring players for the Cardinals were at least 2-under par in the final round.  Freshman Cole Solis (San Antonio/The Episcopal School) led the team with a 4-under par 68 on the par-72, 6542-yard course.  Seniors Myles Dumont (Eagle Lake/Rice Consolidated HS), Scott Shaw (San Antonio/Churchill HS) and Austin Wylie (Boerne/Boerne HS) posted scores of 69, 70 and 71, respectively.  The team score of 278 broke the old school record of 279 that came two years ago at The Tribute Golf Club.

Overall, Dumont finished in a tie for third place, just one stroke behind Zander Winston of Cameron and Elliott Fullalove of Western Texas College.  Winston won a scorecard playoff over Fullalove to finish as the tournament champion at 8-under par.  Dumont came in at 7-under par after rounds of 68 and 69.  Wylie finished in seventh place at 5-under par while Solis finished in 12th at 1-under par.  Jeff Conflitti (Plymouth, MI/Novi Detroit Catholic Central HS) entered the final round as the individual leader, but ended up in a tie for fifth after a 66-72=138 showing while playing as an individual medalist for UIW.  Conflitti tied for the tournament lead with 11 birdies while Dumont had 10 birdies.

Western Texas College finished in third place at 4-under par and they were followed by Arkansas-Fort Smith (-2), Newman (+8), Dallas Baptist (+10), Texas A&M-International (+11), Texas A&M-Commerce (+14), East Central (+17) and Texas A&M-Commerce 'B' (+24).

The Cardinals have now finished the fall portion of their schedule.  They will be back in action on February 8-9 at the Litz Memorial Tournament that they host at The Republic Golf Course.
