UIW Renews Rivalry with ACU

ABILENE, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian University basketball teams will meet in a Southland Conference doubleheader on Saturday starting with the women's game at 2 p.m. and the men's game at 4 p.m.

Both UIW teams are coming off home double overtime losses and will be looking to get back on the winning track.  The women head into Saturday with a 5-11 record and a 2-3 mark in the Southland Conference while the men are 9-5 with a 1-3 conference record.

The UIW women are led by junior guard Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) who is scoring 14.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.  She has scored 23 points in each of her last two games.  Yvonne Maosa (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) has put up matching 21-point, 10-rebound performances in her last two games and is the team's leading rebounder at 7.6 per contest.  Freshman guard Jazmine Holman (Arlington/Arlington Bowie HS) had one of the best games in school history against McNeese State on Thursday when she had 11 points, 12 assists, eight rebounds and seven steals.  She is ranked in the top five in the conference in both assists and steals.

The UIW men have been a little unlucky in conference play this year, but can start to turn things around against the Wildcats.  The Cardinals are second in the nation in scoring at 86.0 points per game and they are led by senior guard Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) who is also second in the nation in scoring with 23.3 points per game.  Livingston is also averaging 5.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists and is 10th in the nation with 2.57 steals per game.  Jontrell Walker (Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) is one of the top scoring freshmen in the nation at 17.5 points per game.  Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) has scored over 20 points in the last two games and is averaging 15.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.

The ACU women are 8-8 with a 1-5 conference record.  They started the season well, but have lost 6-of-7 games.  They are scoring over 70 points per game and have five players averaging in double figures.  Last year, the Wildcats swept the season series from the Cardinals.

The ACU men are 9-8 overall and 3-1 in conference play with their only loss coming against Stephen F. Austin.  They have been playing their best basketball of the season over the past month.  Parker Wentz and Harrison Hawkins provide the team with a nice backcourt duo and both players average over 13 points per game.  The Cardinals won both games against the Wildcats last year.
