SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI – The University of the Incarnate Word's volleyball team dropped two matches against Missouri State and Oral Roberts at the University Plaza/Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Tournament, hosted by Missouri State, Saturday.
In the first match of the day, The Cardinals (1-6) lost to Missouri State in straight sets 25-20, 25-10, 25-20. The Bears out-hit the Cardinals, 43-28 with a .317 hitting efficiency, while the Cardinals only hit .073. Lily Johnson led the way for the Bears with 15 kills and hitting .244.
For the Cardinals,
Shaina Garza (San Antonio/Warren HS) led the team with 11 kills and 11 digs, and also hit a team best .250.
In the second match of the day, the Cardinals made it tougher for their opponent, Oral Roberts, losing in four sets, 25-21, 21-25, 25-14, 25-21.
The Cardinals were leading 18-14 at one point in the first set, and then lost 11 of the next 14 points to drop the first set. In the second set, the Cardinals hit a terrific .417 with 17 kills and took the set 25-21. For the next two sets, UIW combined to hit only .061, sending them home winless in the tournament.
Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) led the Cardinals with 12 kills,
Claudia Hernandez (San Antonio/Antonian HS) led with 13 digs and
Kaitlyn Brooks (Sugar Land/Fort Bend Austin HS) added 18 assists.
The Cardinals continue their very competitive tournament schedule next week at Texas Tech. They will face the host Texas Tech on Thursday, and Texas State and Gardner-Webb Friday.
