LUBBOCK, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team dropped a three-set decision at Texas Tech on Thursday night 25-14, 25-19, 25-19 at United Supermarkets Arena.
The Red Raiders (7-0) easily won the first set, but the Cardinals (1-7) made it tough on the home team over the final two sets. In the second set, UIW jumped out to a 9-4 lead and still held a 16-13 lead before the Red Raiders started to come back. TTU tied the match at 16-16 after three straight attack errors by the Cardinals. UIW reclaimed the lead at 17-16, but that was the last time as the Red Raiders scored nine of the final 11 points.
In the third set, Texas Tech jumped out to an 11-6 lead, but the Cardinals responded with five straight points, including two on service aces by
Kaitlyn Brooks (Sugar Land/Fort Bend Austin HS). UIW took the lead three plays later on an ace by
Jordan Reifsteck (Allen/Oswego East HS). The Red Raiders were able to take control of the set with five straight points to take an 18-14 lead. That would be the closest the Cardinals would get.
The Cardinals finished the match with 27 kills, 31 digs and 5.0 blocks.
Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) led the team with 10 kills and three blocks while Brooks finished with 13 assists.
Brittani Dear (LaVernia/LaVernia HS) led the team with eight digs.
The Red Raiders pounded out 39 kills and had a .237 attack. The finished with 40 digs and 13.0 blocks. Lauren Douglass had nine kills, eight blocks and a .571 attack while Mikia Mills had nine kills, five blocks and a .467 attack. Marguerite Grubb dished out 29 assists and had 12 digs.
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday with a pair of matches in Lubbock. They play Texas State at 10 a.m. and Gardner-Webb at 4 p.m.
