Softball Closes Season on High Note

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team ended their inaugural season in NCAA Division I with a 12-4 run-rule victory in five innings at Southland Conference rival Abilene Christian on Sunday.

The Wildcats (21-28, 10-10) scored first, but the game quickly turned to the Cardinals (21-30, 7-14).  UIW scored four times in the third inning, including a three-run homer by Mikaela Flores (Lockhart/Lockhart HS).  ACU tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homer by Lyndi Smith and a single by Ashley Nolan.

The Cardinals put the game away in the fifth inning.  UIW scored five times on two singles, three walks and two errors by the Wildcats.  Flores capped off the inning with her second three-run homer of the game.

Kristin Hebert (Humble/Atascocita HS) picked up the win for the Cardinals.  She allowed nine hits, four runs and a walk while striking out one in a complete game.  The offense had eight hits and drew seven walks.  Flores was the star of the game with two home runs and six runs batted in giving her a team-high six homers on the season.

Shelby Waltrip (Orangevale, CA/Casa Robles HS) and Hebert each had two hits for the Cardinals.  Four players scored at least two runs in the game for UIW.

The Wildcats finished with nine hits as Courtney Flanary and Nolan led the way with two hits apiece.  Emily Seidel was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs in a third of an inning.  ACU also committed five errors in the game while the Cardinals were flawless in the field.
