HOUSTON, TEXAS – After losing three games against Southeastern Louisiana over the weekend, the University of the Incarnate Word softball team take a break from Southland Conference action to play a doubleheader at Texas Southern University on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
The Tigers (18-14) have won nine of their last 10 games. They have a strong offense that shows seven players hitting above .300 and each has at least 48 at bats. Chelsea Guenther tops the team with a .440 average in 75 at bats and a slugging percentage of .507, while Thomasina Garza has four home runs and a team high of 36 runs batted in to compliment a .398 average.
The Tigers have a deep pitching staff with seven pitchers who have appeared in the circle. Sammantha Jimenez has been the top pitcher for the team with a 5-3 record and a 3.36 ERA while Alaina Stubblefield chips in with a 3.43 ERA and a team high 28 strikeouts.
The Cardinals (14-21) are also posting a strong offense this year with a .294 batting average and a .440 slugging percentage.
Mikaela Flores (Lockhart/Lockhart HS) boasts a .476 batting average in 42 at bats and a slugging percentage of .738.
Brooke DuBois (Pearland/Pearland HS) continues to hit for power with an average of .385, five doubles, 12 RBI's and a slugging percentage of .596.
Freshman Kristen Hebert (Humble Atascocita HS) leads the pitching staff with a 4.05 ERA and 5-7 record. Flores has been the top relief pitcher on the team with a 5-0 record, 4.67 ERA and a team high 48 strikeouts in 22 appearances.
