SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team returns home on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. game against UT-Pan American at Sullivan Field.
The Cardinals (13-27) defeated the Broncs (19-26) earlier this season in Edinburg. On April 8, the Cardinals scored a season high 14 runs in a 14-3 win over UTPA. They had 14 hits and drew eight walks in the contest.
Jason Stone (Georgetown/Georgetown HS) and
Bryce Shepherd (Coldspring/Coldspring-Oakhurst HS) each had three hits for UIW.
The Cardinals are hitting .248 as a team and the offense is led by junior outfielder
Jesse Hoover (Marion/Marion HS). He is hitting .318 with a team high 12 doubles and 30 RBI's. He is currently riding a 16-game hitting streak and boasts a .389 on-base percentage and .448 slugging percentage.
UIW will try to bounce back from a pair of 1-run losses this weekend at McNeese State.
Cody Richey (Comfort/Comfort HS) has been the mid-week starter for the Cardinals over the past few weeks. He is 2-2 with a 5.19 ERA in 26.0 innings.
Geno Encina (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) has been the top pitcher on the team with a 5-6 record, 2.66 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 74.1 innings.
The Broncs have a .244 team batting average and have scored just over four runs per game. Alex Howe is the top hitter with a .329 batting average, 13 doubles, four homers and 31 runs batted in. He boasts a .443 on-base percentage and leads the team with 10 stolen bases. The pitching staff has a trio of excellent starting pitchers in Sam Street, Blake English and Alex Henson. Street is 10-0 with a 1.69 ERA and eight complete games.
