Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team grabbed a 9-3 victory over visiting Southland Conference rival Central Arkansas on Saturday morning at Cardinals Field on Senior Day.
The Cardinals (20-28, 6-12) recognized a pair of seniors prior to the game, twin sisters Shelby and
Whitney Waltrip (Orangevale, CA/Casa Robles HS). Both players made significant contributions to the win. Shelby started at catcher and went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Whitney got the start in the circle and limited the Bears (22-31, 11-12) to three hits and two runs in 5.0 innings en route to earning the win.
The visitors scored in the top of the first inning for an early lead, but the UIW offense finally came alive in the third inning. After scoring one run in the first 14 innings of the series, the Cardinals scored nine times in a three inning span.
The Cardinals got on the board in the third inning thanks to an unearned run. In the fourth inning,
Mikaela Flores (Lockhart/Lockhart HS) led with a home run and was followed by two doubles and two singles to bring in a total of four runs in the inning. In the fifth, the Cardinals pounded out six singles and scored four more times.
Danielle Ramirez (San Antonio/Marshall HS) capped each inning with a pair of two-out, two-run singles.
The Cardinals finished the game with 15 hits in all. Ramirez was 3-for-4 with four RBI's and Flores went 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Anna-Marie Moore (Aloha, OR/Aloha HS) entered the game 0-for-5 for the season at the plate, but went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI's to spark the team.
The Bears finished the game with four hits. Sarah Bigej went 2-for-4 and drove in a run to lead the offense. Kylee Studioso dominated the Cardinals on Friday, but took the loss on Saturday after allowing eight hits and four earned runs in 3.2 innings.
The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at UTSA.
