Sugar Bears Sweep Doubleheader from Cardinals

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday night at home to Southland Conference rival Central Arkansas, 9-1 and 5-0.

In the first game, the Sugar Bears (22-30, 11-11) dominated the Cardinals (19-28, 5-12).  The visitors scored twice in the second, three times in third inning and four times in the fifth inning to win by run-rule.

The Cardinals scored their only run of the night in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Alex Alonzo led off with a walk and scored on Taylor Johnson's two-out triple.  Kylee Studioso allowed UIW just two hits and two walks while striking out six in 5.0 innings to earn the win.

The Sugar Bears finished the game with 10 hits.  Hannah Stirton hit the lone home run of the game and drove in two.  Hayley Parker went 2-for-3 with two run and two RBI's while Jessie Taylor had two doubles, scored a run and drove in another.

The second game was much closer.  The Sugar Bears scored single runs in the third and fourth innings.  The Cardinals had their chances in both innings to score.  In the third, they loaded the bases with no outs, but Studioso struck out two batters and induced a third to pop out.  In the fourth, UIW loaded the bases with two outs, but could not get a clutch hit.

Central Arkansas scored twice in the sixth inning and then added another run in the seventh inning to create the final margin.  Briana Whisenhunt was 3-for-4 with two RBI's and a triple.  Ashley Boswell slugged a solo home run.  Overall, the team had 11 hits.  Studioso tossed a second complete game shutout of the day allowing five hits and no walks with nine strikeouts.

Johnson had two of the Cardinals' five hits.  Kristin Hebert took the loss after allowing four hits and striking out seven in 5.2 innings.

The teams will play the final game of the series on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cardinals Field.
