SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team will play their final three home games of the season this weekend against Southland Conference rival Central Arkansas. They will play a Friday doubleheader at 5 p.m. and a final game on Saturday at 11 a.m.
The Cardinals (19-26, 5-10) are 7-9 at Cardinals Field this year. They are hitting .283 as a team and have hit 22 home runs in 45 games.
Mikaela Flores (Lockhart/Lockhart HS) is hitting .397 with three home runs and is also 5-2 as a pitcher. Similarly,
Brooke DuBois (Pearland/Pearland HS) is the second leading hitter on the team with a .365 batting average and .603 slugging percentage while going 7-13 in the pitcher's circle.
Freshman
Kellen Robles (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) tops the Cardinals in hits (37), runs (23) and triples (2). She is also hitting .352 and is a perfect 9-for-9 on stolen base chances. Another freshman,
Danielle Ramirez (San Antonio/Marshall HS) leads the squad with 11 stolen bases.
The Cardinals have a pair of seniors, twin sisters Shelby and
Whitney Waltrip (Orangevale, CA/Casa Robles HS), who are playing the final home games of their careers. Both players are four-year members of the squad. Shelby has accumulated 48 hits, 10 doubles, five home runs and 35 runs batted in during her career. She holds the single season and career school records for fielding percentage. Whitney was the Lone Star Conference South Division co-Player of the Year and First Team utility player as a freshman. She is a career .321 batter with 75 runs, 143 hits, 31 doubles, 16 homers and 92 RBI's at the plate. In the pitching circle, she is 32-39 with a 4.42 earned run average and .264 strikeouts in 424.1 innings.
The Sugar Bears (20-30, 9-11) are hitting .266 as a team and have three players over .300. Briana Whisenhunt leads the squad with a .359 average while Jessie Taylor has cracked 10 home runs and driven in 47 runs. The pitching staff has a 4.58 earned run average. Kylee Studioso is the top pitcher on the team with a 12-9 record, 3.78 ERA and 166 strikeouts in 126.0 innings.
