Softball Stopped on the Road

Box Score NATCHITOCHES, LOUISIANA – A pair of big innings for Northwestern State was too much for the visiting University of the Incarnate Word softball team to handle on Saturday.  The Lady Demons (21-19, 10-9) defeated the Cardinals (19-26, 5-10) at Lady Demon Diamond in Southland Conference action.

Northwestern State scored four times in the second inning to take an early lead.  Brianna Rodriguez and Cheyenne De La Garza each had run-scoring doubles in the inning.

The Cardinals scored single runs in the third and fourth innings.  Danielle Ramirez and Taylor Johnson each drove in runs for the team.  Johnson and Kellen Robles had the only hits in the game for UIW.

Britt Jones put the Lady Demons up 5-2 in the fourth inning with a solo home run.  They tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.  Overall, the team had 11 hits in the game.  Jones and De La Garza each drove in two runs in the game.  Kaylee Guidry picked up the win while tossing a complete game.  She gave up two hits, one earned run and three walks while striking out five.

Mikaela Flores took the loss for the Cardinals.  She gave up five hits and three runs in 1.2 innings.

The Cardinals are back in action on Friday at home against Central Arkansas.  They will play a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
