Lions Win Series Over Cardinals

Box Score HAMMOND, LOUISIANA – A hard fought Southland Conference baseball series between University of the Incarnate Word and Southeastern Louisiana came down to a wild pitch on Sunday.  The Lions came from behind to win 5-4 with a walk-off win in the ninth inning at PDK at Alumni Field.

The Cardinals (11-22, 4-5) were a little unlucky in their bid to top the Lions (23-13, 9-6) as they out-hit the home team, 14-4 held the lead for the majority of the game.  They jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning when Slade Brown (Keller/Keller HS) and Jesse Hoover (Marion/Marion HS) hit back-to-back doubles to put the Cardinals on the board.

In the second inning, Bryce Shepherd and Aaron Warren each had run-scoring singles for the visitors to give UIW a 3-0 lead.  Meanwhile, UIW starting pitcher Jacob Potts (Glendale, AZ/Browne HS) cruised through the first three innings giving up just a leadoff walk in the first inning.

The Lions got on the board in the fourth inning.  A lead-off hit batsman was followed by singles from Jameson Fisher and Andrew Godbold to make it 3-1.  UIW's only error loaded the bases allowing SLU to tie the game with a bases-loaded walk and a ground out.

The score remained 3-3 until the sixth inning.  Warren reached via an infield single and then went to second on a passed ball.  Brown's two-out single gave the Cardinals a 4-3 lead.  Fisher tied the game for the Lions in the bottom of the seventh inning with his own two-out single.

The Cardinals did not threaten to score in the eighth or ninth innings.  In the bottom of the ninth, Kyle Cedotal led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  After an out was recorded, another wild pitch allowed Cedotal to score and give the Lions the victory.

Dylan Hills earned the victory for SLU with 3.0 shutout innings of relief.  He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out two.  Kris Looper (Wharton/Wharton HS) was handed his second loss of the year for the Cardinals.  Potts pitched 6.0 innings allowing two hits, one earned run and three walks while striking out two in a no-decision for UIW.

Warren and Brown each had three hits, scored a run and drove in one to lead the Cardinals offense.  Colton Besett and Jason Stone (Georgetown/Georgetown HS) each had a pair of hits in the contest.

The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday night at 6:30 at home against Nicholls State.
