Softball Splits with Prairie View

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team split a pair of home games against Prairie View A&M on Friday.  They lost the first game, 8-4 and then won the second game, 9-3 for their first win against an NCAA Division I team this year.

The Lady Panthers (1-6) controlled the first game.  They scored twice in the top of the first inning and led 3-2 heading into the fourth inning when they exploded for four runs.  Lexus Walker cracked a two-run homer in the inning and Alisa Navarro capped off the inning with a two-run single and she finished with three RBI's for the game.

Prairie View had 10 hits in the game.  Brenicia Woods went 3-for-4 with four runs, an RBI and four stolen bases.  Monica Cartwright picked up the win after tossing 4.1 innings of relief.  She allowed four hits, two runs and a walk while striking out two.

The Cardinals (10-11) scored twice in the first inning and twice in the seventh inning.  Taylor Johnson (Schertz/Clemens HS) went 3-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base while Katie Helm (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) had a pinch-hit two-run homer.  Whitney Waltrip (Orangevale, CA/ Casa Robles HS) went 1-for-1 with two walks at the plate, but took the loss in the pitching circle.  She allowed six hits, six earned runs and four walks in 3.2 innings.

In the second game, it was the Cardinals that never trailed.  They scored lone runs in the first and second innings before putting up four runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 6-1 lead.

The Cardinals pounded out 12 hits in the game with freshman Christy Trevino (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) going 3-for-4 with two runs and a double.  Waltrip went 2-for-3 with two runs and a three-run homer in the fourth inning.  Brooke DuBois (Pearland/Pearland HS) was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI's.  She also earned the win in the pitching circle.  She allowed five hits, two earned runs and three walks while striking out four in 5.0 innings for the win.

Cally Falls was tagged with the loss for the Panthers. She went 4.0 innings and allowed six runs.

The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday at home against St. Edward's.
