Cardinals Take on Bears

WACO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team travels to Baylor University on Tuesday and Wednesday for a quick two-game series at Baylor Ballpark.  They will start at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday and 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Cardinals (7-17) went 1-2 this weekend at Abilene Christian.  Slade Brown (Keller/Keller HS) has been the top offensive player for the team with a .347 batting average and 15 runs batted in.  He has also reached base safely in all 24 games this year.  Freshman Mark Whitehead (San Antonio/Johnson HS) is the only other Cardinal hitting over .300 on the season with a .309 average and a team high 21 runs.

The Cardinals plan to throw freshman Cody Richey (Comfort/Comfort HS) in the first game.  He has made six appearances on the mound this season and is making his second start.  Overall, the UIW pitching staff has a 5.75 ERA.  Kris Looper (Wharton/Wharton HS) and Alex Shaffer (Seattle/Nathan Hale HS) have been the most consistent relievers on the team with a combined 27 appearances and each has an ERA under 3.40.

The Bears (13-13) dropped a pair of games on the road to West Virginia over the weekend.  They are only hitting .224 as a team, but boast a 3.77 ERA.  Brett Doe is hitting at a .309 clip to lead the team while Adam Toth has eight extra base hits and 11 RBI's.  Dillon Newman is slated to start on the mound.  He has a 2-1 record with a 2.86 ERA in 28.1 innings.  Josh Michalec, the BU closer, already has nine saves on the season and sports a 1.96 ERA.
