SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team remains at home for a second straight weekend against a Southland Conference opponent. They took 2-of-3 from Abilene Christian last weekend and welcome Nicholls State to town for a three-game series this weekend. They play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at noon.
The Cardinals (13-16, 2-1) are hitting .293 as a team and averaging 4.9 runs per game.
Whitney Waltrip (Orangevale, CA/Casa Robles HS) leads the squad with a .405 batting average while
Kellen Robles (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) is hitting .362 with 16 runs scored and
Taylor Johnson (Schertz/Clemens HS) has a .329 average and has also scored 16 runs.
The UIW pitching staff has a 4.90 earned run average with 118 strikeouts in 187 innings.
Mikaela Flores (Lockhart/Lockhart HS) has a 5-0 record with a 2.87 ERA while
Kristin Hebert (Humble/Atascocita HS) is 5-6 with a 4.71 ERA.
The Colonels (10-24, 1-7) have struggled at the plate this year with a .242 batting average and just 3.1 runs per game. Taylor Terrio is the only player hitting over .300 with a .327 batting average and a team high 16 runs scored. Brittany Marcet has cracked four home runs and driven in 20. Jackie Johnson is the top pitcher on the team with a 2.76 ERA and a 7-13 record.
