Strong Pitching Leads to UIW Victory

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team put on a strong pitching performance on Sunday at Sullivan Field and nabbed a 5-1 win over visiting LIU-Brooklyn in the series finale.

The Cardinals (3-8) received a strong pitching performance from Jacob Potts (Glendale, AZ/Cochise College) who tossed 5+ shutout innings allowing four hits and three walks while striking out four.  He came out of the game after giving up a pair of singles in the sixth inning, but Brandon Cogbill (Lake Dallas/Howard College) was able to strand the runners on base.

"That is what we needed," said UIW head coach Dan Heep.  "We got some innings out of our starter.  Potts did a good job bouncing back from a tough start to get us into the sixth inning which was important for the final game of the series."

The UIW offense did their part as well building up a 4-0 lead through the first five innings.  Slade Brown (Keller/Keller HS) put the team on the board with a two-out, run-scoring double in the first inning.  In the third, the Cardinals took advantage of a pair of LIU errors to go up 3-0.  Brown hit another double in the fifth inning and came around to score on Brandon Clark's (San Antonio/Madison HS) two-out single.

"We got some timely hits and scored some runs," said Heep.  "When you do stuff like that and you get a lead, at bats change and the other team changes."

The Blackbirds (3-5) scored their only run in the ninth inning.  They finished with nine hits and left eight runners on base.  The Cardinals closed out the win with a perfect 4-6-3 double play.

"We still got a lot of work to do, but it's good to get a win like this," said Heep.  "We have to become more consistent, but it is a learning process for us."

The Cardinals finished with 10 hits on the afternoon.  Brown, Ethan McGill (Penn Valley, CA/Yuba CC) and Jonathan Armijo (San Antonio/Marion Military) each had two hits in the game and Mark Whitehead (San Antonio/Johnson HS) went 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs from his leadoff spot.  Cogbill pitched 2.0 shutout innings of relief allowing two hits while striking out two.

The Cardinals quickly turnaround and will play Tuesday night at UT-San Antonio for a single 9-inning game.
