Softball Splits at St. Edward's

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AUSTIN, TEXAS – After playing a game on Tuesday in San Antonio, the University of the Incarnate Word and St. Edward's changed locations for a softball doubleheader on Wednesday at Diane Daniels Field.  The Hilltoppers won the first game, 8-1 and the Cardinals won the second game, 4-3.

In the opener, it was all Hilltoppers (19-11) as Katelyn Klug scattered six hits and two walks in a complete game victory.  She allowed only an unearned run in the fifth inning while also striking out five.  St. Edward's used aggressive base running to score four of their runs without the aid of a run batted in.

The Hilltoppers had 11 hits and stole four bases in the game.  Kendall Lucas, Caitie Carney and Marisa Bogart each had a pair of singles.

The Cardinals (11-13) left 10 runners on base in the game and were unable to come up with the clutch hit.  Lindsay Hood had two singles to lead the offense.  Brooke DuBois took the loss in the circle after allowing seven hits, three earned runs and two walks in 4.1 innings.

In the second game, Kristin Hebert provided all the offense the Cardinals would need.  In the top of the first inning she crushed a two-run homer to left centerfield after a double by Alex Zepeda.  In the fifth inning, she cracked a two-out, two-run double that was only possible because Zepeda reached first base after striking out on a wild pitch.

The Hilltoppers tried to get the sweep, but came up short.  Carner cracked a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning and Cydney Ervin hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth inning.  They had the tying run on second base in the bottom of the sixth, but Mikaela Flores was able to get the next two batters out.  She retired the side in the bottom of the seventh for a save.

In addition to her hitting prowess, Hebert also picked up the win for the Cardinals.  She started the game and went 4.0 innings allowing six hits and three runs.  Flores allowed just one hit while striking out two in 3.0 innings or work.  Sarah Debrow took the loss for St. Edward's despite striking out 12 in a complete game.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday against UH-Victoria for a home doubleheader at 2 p.m.
