Softball Splits Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 VICTORIA, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team split a pair of games on Friday night at UH-Victoria.  The Cardinals won the first game, 9-3 and lost the second game, 8-7.

In the first game, the Cardinals (9-8) used an eight-run fourth inning to run away with the game.  UIW took advantage of two errors and all eight runs were unearned.  Mikaela Flores (Lockhart/Lockhart HS) improved to 5-0 on the season after pitching the final 3.1 innings.  She held the Jags scoreless striking out seven batters while allowing one hit and two walks.

The Jaguars (6-6) held an early 2-0 lead, but were not able to take full advantage of the four errors committed by the Cardinals.  They left 12 runners on base in the game.  Alex Holland was tagged with the loss in 3.2 innings of work.

Taylor Johnson (Schertz/Clemens HS) was the lone UIW player with two hits in the game and Kaitlyn Thomas went 1-for-1 with two runs, two RBI's and two walks.

The second game went back and forth.  The Jaguars led 2-0, 5-1 and 7-5 and each time the Cardinals came, but UH-V had the last at bat that proved to be the difference.  Each team pounded out 15 hits in the game and the Cardinals were also plagued by five errors.

The Jaguars built up their initial lead with solo runs in the first and third innings and three runs in the fifth inning.  The Cardinals tied the game in the sixth inning at 5-5.

Alex Alonzo (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS), Brooke DuBois (Pearland/Pearland HS) and Katie Helm (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) each had doubles in the inning and they tied the game on the Jaguars' lone error.  UH-V came back in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own and took the lead on an Ashley Winegeart double.

In the top of the seventh inning, Flores led off with a home run for the Cardinals.  Alonzo followed with a double and was removed for a pinch runner, Kellen Robles (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS).  Robles would score on pinch-hitter Whitney Waltrip's (Orangevale, CA/Casa Robles HS) one-out single to tie the game.

In the bottom of the seventh, Alex Holland led off with a double and then scored the winning run on a UIW throwing error on the next batter.  DuBois took the loss for the Cardinals while Holland was credited with the win.

Helm led the Cardinals with three hits and two runs while Johnson, Flores, Alonzo and DuBois each had two hits.

The Jaguars had five players with at least two hits in the game.  Shelby Smith went 3-for-4 and scored twice while Winegeart went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI's.

The Cardinals are back in action on Sunday at St. Mary's for at 1 p.m.
