Canned Food Drive for San Antonio Food Bank

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's and men's basketball teams welcome Southland Conference rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday night for a doubleheader at the McDermott Convocation Center.  The women's game begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by the men's game at approximately 7:30 p.m.

The UIW women (8-12, 2-6) are hoping to snap a four-game losing streak that includes three losses by less than 10 points.  Senior Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) is averaging 13.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.  Ifunanya Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) is the only other player on the team averaging in double figures with 10.5 points and a team high 7.3 rebounds per game.  Mora and her twin sister Kosisio were each recently named to the Capital One Academic All-District VI First Team.

The Islander women (10-11, 3-7) are led by Jasmine Shaw who is averaging 15.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while knocking down 51 three-pointers.  Brittany Mbamalu is the second-leading scorer on the team with 10.6 points per game.  She has made 62 three-pointers on the season.  The team excels at rebounding and has a strong rebound margin for the season.

The UIW men (16-5, 4-4) are on their first losing streak of the season after falling to Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin on the road last week.  They came within a few seconds of handing SFA their first SLC loss of the season.  The Cardinals are ranked highly nationally in a number of statistical categories and they lead the conference in seven different categories.  Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) leads the way for the team with 19.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.  Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) is also one of the top scorers in the conference at 17.2 points per game and he has made 49 three-pointers.

The Islander men (10-13, 7-3) have been one of the surprises of the season in the Southland Conference.  Point guard John Jordan is the team leader with 15.3 points and 4.8 assists per game.  They have a balanced scoring attack with five other players averaging 7-9 points per game.

Any fan who brings two canned food items with them will receive free admission to the doubleheader.  All items collected will be given to the San Antonio Food Bank.
