Two More Wins for Softball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team picked up a pair of wins on Wednesday at UT-Permian Basin.  They won the first game, 9-5 and the second game, 10-5 in extra innings.

In the first game, the Cardinals (8-1) fell behind 5-4 after four innings, but they battled back scoring a two runs in the fifth and sixth innings and another run in the seventh inning.  The Falcons (3-11) took the lead in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Jennifer Quam and a two-run single by Niki DiSera.

UIW reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth inning and never looked back.  Whitney Waltrip's (Orangevale, CA/Casa Robles HS) RBI single tied the game and then Courtney McCoy (Hutto/Hendrickson HS) put the team on top with another base hit.  Christy Trevino (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) gave the team some breathing room in the sixth inning with a two-run triple.

Kristin Hebert (Humble/Atascocita HS) improved to 3-1 on the season after tossing 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.  She allowed two hits and struck out one.  The Cardinals had 13 hits, including three by Waltrip who was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.  Hebert, Trevino and McCoy each had two hits in the game while Trevino, Shelby Waltrip (Orangevale, CA/Casa Robles HS) and McCoy each drove in two runs.

Desiree Valero took the loss for the Falcons.  She allowed 12 hits, six earned runs and a walk in 5.1 innings of work.  Quam went 4-for-4 at the plate with three doubles and three runs.  DiSera drove in a game high three runs.

In the second game, the Falcons scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-2 lead.  They would not score again the rest of the game and they would be held without a hit after the third inning.

The Cardinals scored twice in the first inning on an Alex Alonzo (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) double and then scored twice more in the third inning.  Hebert cracked a two-run homer to make it 5-4.  UIW tied the score in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Brooke DuBois (Pearland/Pearland HS).

The game went to extra innings with the score tied 5-5.  In the top of the eighth inning, the Cardinals exploded for five runs.  Emily Lasky's (Lewisville/Lewisville HS) pinch-hit two-run homer put the team ahead and it was Lasky's first career hit.  They would tack on three more runs before the rally ended. Mikaela Flores (Lockhart/Lockhart HS) closed out a brilliant relief performance by retiring the side in order in the bottom of the eighth.

Flores improved to 4-0 on the season after pitching 4.0 perfect innings of relief.  She struck out four batters in the game.  The Cardinals pounded out 13 hits with Alex Zepeda (Sinton/Sinton HS) and Alonzo each getting three safeties.  Zepeda scored twice and Alonzo drove in three runs.

The Falcons were led by Quam who had two more hits and scored a run.  Miley McKee drove in two runs.  Valero took the loss after allowing eight hits and five earned runs in 3.2 innings.

The Cardinals are back in action on Friday in El Paso, TX where they will play UTEP and New Mexico State.
