UIW at Irish Baseball Classic

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team will take part in the Irish Baseball Classic this weekend at Nelson Wolff Stadium hosted by Notre Dame.  The Cardinals open with Gonzaga on Thursday at 3 p.m., then play Santa Clara on Friday at 4 p.m. and Notre Dame on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The Cardinals (1-2) are coming off a solid performance at the UT-Arlington Tournament last weekend where they defeated UTA and lost to #18 Oklahoma State and Stephen F. Austin.  UIW is hitting .290 as a team after three games and have scored 14 runs.  Slade Brown (Keller/Keller HS) led the offense with a 6-for-12 performance.  Geno Encina (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) picked up the team's lone victory on the mound after allowing just five hits, a walk and an unearned run in 5.1 innings against UTA.

The tournament is played in a round-robin fashion with each team playing each other one time.  On Sunday, a championship game will be played at Wolff Stadium and a third place game will be held on the campus of Trinity University.  Both games begin at 11 a.m.  Tickets for all games are $10.
