Box Score ARLINGTON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team closed out their opening weekend as a member of NCAA Division I with a 12-5 loss to Stephen F. Austin at Clay Gould Ballpark on Sunday.
The Cardinals (1-2) scored first in the bottom of the first inning.
Slade Brown (Keller/Keller HS) tripled with two outs to bring in
Blake Woosley (Corvallis, OR/Philomath HS) who had singled to reach base.
The LumberJacks (2-1) did not trail for long as they scored the next nine runs in the game. They scored three times in the second, twice in the third, three times in the fourth and once in the sixth.
UIW cut into the SFA lead with three runs in the sixth inning.
Ethan McGill (Penn Valley, CA/Nevada Union HS) walked to lead off the inning and then
Bryce Shepherd (Coldspring/Coldspring-Oakhurst HS) doubled. Two batters later,
Jonathan Armijo (San Antonio/Highlands HS) singled to drive in a run and then
Blue Hybner (Shiner/St. Paul HS) followed with a two-run triple on his first career at bat. The final run for the Cardinals came in the eighth inning when Armijo singled to lead off the inning and came around to score on a ground out.
SFA finished the game with 14 hits, including five doubles, and they walked 13 times. They had five players with multiple hits in the game led by Mackenzie Handel who went 3-for-5. Matthew Dickey led the team with three RBI's and Nick Ramos scored three times. Dillon Mangham picked up the win going 5.0 innings while allowing seven hits, one run and no walks while striking out six.
The Cardinals managed 12 hits in the contest. Armijo went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while Woosley and Brown each had two hits.
Jacob Potts (Glendale, AZ/Browne HS) took the loss in his first career start for the team.
The Cardinals are back in action next weekend at the Notre Dame Tournament to be played at Wulff Stadium in San Antonio. The team will play Gonzaga, Santa Clara and Notre Dame, respectively starting on Thursday.
