Box Score 3 FORT WORTH, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team opened the Cowtown Tournament by going 2-1 on Friday at Gateway Park. The Cardinals defeated Oklahoma Wesleyan, 8-5, lost to Texas Wesleyan, 5-3 and defeated Baker, 4-3.
UIW 8, OWU 5
In the first game of the tournament, the Cardinals (4-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and led 5-2 in the fifth inning, but required extra innings to get the win.
UIW got the scoring started in the second inning.
Shelby Waltrip (Orangevale, CA/Casa Robles HS) came through with a two-out single to score her sister, Whitney (Orangevale/Casa Robles HS). Two batters later,
Taylor Johnson (San Antonio/Johnson HS) cracked a single to bring in two runs. The Cardinals added two more runs in the fifth inning when freshmen
Kellen Robles and
Kristin Hebert each drove in runs.
OWU got on the board in the fourth inning on a two-out, two-run double by Mariah Shepherd. They tacked on a run in the fifth and then tied the game in the sixth inning. Miranda Kiser drove in a run with a single and then Macy Wright tied the game by drawing a bases loaded walk.
In the eighth inning, Johnson came through again for UIW with a two-run triple and then scored on a single by Robles.
Mikaela Flores shut down OWU in the eighth and picked up the win after tossing 2.2 shutout innings of relief.
TWU 5, UIW 3
In the second game of the day, the Cardinals took an early lead, but the Rams scored five times in the middle innings to take the win.
Once again, Johnson got the Cardinals started with a two-out, run-scoring single in the bottom of the second inning. In the fourth inning, the Rams exploded for three runs including a two-run double by Kali Jester.
The Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman
Christy Trevino's two-out, two-run double tied the game.
The Rams scored the winning go-ahead runs in the top of the sixth inning. Lauren Davis led off the inning with a double and then scored on Dani West's two-out single. West scored when Maegen Alvarez followed with another single.
Amanda Windham picked up the win for the Rams in the circle. She tossed a complete game while allowing seven hits, three runs and walks while striking out two. Hebert took the loss for the Cardinals while pitching a complete game.
UIW 4, Baker 3
In the final game of the day, the Cardinals won a thriller over the Wildcats. With the game tied 3-3 in the seventh inning, Alex Alonzo cracked her first career home run to win the game.
The Cardinals got to that point in the game by scoring lone runs in the first, fifth and sixth innings. Robles and Hebert each had doubles in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead. After allowing two runs in the bottom of the fifth, the Cardinals tied the game in the sixth inning on Robles' two-out single to score pinch-runner
Courtney McCoy.
Brooke DuBois earned the win for UIW after allowing seven hits, two earned runs and two walks while striking out seven in a complete game.
The Cardinals close out the tournament today with games against University of Arts and Sciences and Northwood University.
