Men's Swimming and Diving

Swim Teams Handle Tigers

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word swimming and diving teams each defeated visiting Trinity University on Friday night at the Barshop Natatorium.  The women won 118-101 while the men won 115.5-94.5. (Results)

Both Cardinal teams jumped out to big leads en route to picking up their first home wins of the season.  "Mission accomplished tonight," said UIW head coach Philip Davis.  "We wanted to come out and look very sharp in our key races, and then challenge ourselves in spots where we don't usually compete.  I was very proud of the effort we gave in the pool and on the boards as a whole. When you give great effort, you have a chance to reach your potential as a team and we are on our way to doing just that."
The women were led by seniors Kali Lents (San Antonio/Reagan HS) and Lana Nguyen (Kiev, Ukraine/NPD) who were both double winners.  Lents set a pair of school records in the diving events.  She won the 1-meter with 313.85 points and then came back and won the 3-meter with 340.85 points.  Kim Foster (Spring/Oak Ridge HS) was second in both events with 293.25 and 292.25 points, respectively.

Nguyen remained undefeated in the 50-yard freestyle in five meets.  She touched the wall in first place in a time of 23.74.  She came back in the 100-yard butterfly and won with a time of 58.97.

Lauren Peterson (Paradise Valley, AZ/Xavier College Prep) had a strong day winning the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:34.57 and then she came back finished second in the 100 fly with a time of 59.61.

Adrienne Morrow (Hot Springs, AR/Hot Springs HS) notched her fourth victory of the season in the 200-yard freestyle.  She touched the wall in 1:56.33 for the win.

"Individually for the women, I am very pleased with Lana Nguyen and Adrienne Morrow," said Davis.  "The two seniors won both of their events and I'm also happy with senior Kali Lents who continues to be dominant on the boards for us.  When your seniors are gettting in done, its an easy team for me to coach."

The UIW men started the meet by winning the first seven events.  Brendan Schaffer (Charlotte, NC/Mecklenburg HS) won both diving events.  He opened the meet with 286.10 points in the 1-meter and came back with 324.85 points in the 3-meter.

"I am very proud of Kaulen Applin and his performances tonight for the men," said Davis.  "We had him swim two of his secondary events, and he dominated by winning both of them. That just shows you how competitive he is and what hard work can do for you.  We also found out that we have some very competiitive people that refuse to lose like David Moore and Will Fussell. Those guys swam some differrent things as well, but came out swinging big time."

The Cardinals took first and second in the 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley.  Mehdi El Hazzaz (Casablanca, Morocco/Al Jabr) on the 200 free in 1:44.44 and Oleksii Morgun (Kiev, Ukraine/Vsesvit) was runner-up in 1:46.59.  In the 100 fly, David Moore (San Antonio/Marshall HS) touched the wall first in 51.55 and was trailed by teammate Jorge Escarcega (El Paso/Cathedral HS) in 52.69.  Kaulen Applin (Houston/MacArthur HS) won the 200 IM in 1:54.75 and Aaron Moran (Helotes/Brandeis HS) was second in 1:56.43.

"I was impressed with the team John Ryan has put together at Trinity," said Davis.  "They will be a factor in Division III like always, no doubt about it. We wish them the best for the rest of their season."

The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday at 11 a.m. at LSU.
