Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – A 26.7 percent second half field goal percentage proved to be too much for the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team to overcome in a 76-69 loss to visiting Southland Conference rival Lamar University on Saturday at the McDermott Center.
UIW (8-10, 2-4) held Lamar's (11-8, 6-2) top player, Dominique Edwards to zero points over the first 30 minutes of the game, but she went off for 18 points in the final 10 minutes to lead the visitors to a come from behind win. Incarnate Word led by as many as 12 points in the first half when the team shot over 50 percent from the field and they had a 10 point lead in the second half.
Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) sparked UIW in the first half. She came off the bench and scored 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field and grabbed six rebounds in just 11 minutes of action. Her layup with 9:07 to play in the first period gave the Cardinals a 26-14 lead and capped off a 15-4 run.
Lamar responded by scoring 17 of the next 21 points in the game and took a 31-30 lead on a three-pointer by JaMeisha Edwards with 3:38 to play in the half. UIW recovered and went into halftime with a 39-34 lead.
In the second half, UIW scored the first five points, but Lamar got a pair of three-pointers from Shauna Long that quickly cut the lead back to four points and from there it was tight the rest of the way. The final 17 minutes featured six ties and seven lead changes.
Lamar would take the lead for good with 3:44 remaining on a three-pointer by JaMeisha Edwards made it 64-62. Then, Dominique Edwards took over, scoring on three straight possessions. Gia Ayers sealed the game in the final minute with a layup and a pair of three throws.
Incarnate Word shot 39.3 percent from the field, made 6-of-22 three-point attempts and was 15-of-20 at the free throw line. Whitehead finished with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Ifunanya Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) added 10 points, eight rebounds, six assists, two blocks and two steals. Her sister, Kosy, contributed seven points and nine rebounds while
Joslinn Douglas (Austin/Del Valle HS) had eight points, six rebounds and five assists. UIW committed 22 turnovers in the game, but had 12 more rebounds than Lamar.
Lamar shot 38.2 percent from the field, made 8-of-25 three-point attempts and was 16-of-22 at the foul line. Edwards had a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Ayers finished with 21 points, five assists and three steals in 40 minutes. Long came off the bench to pour in 19 points. JaMeisha Edwards added 10 points and five assists while Caroline Adesulu blocked six shots. The team committed 12 turnovers.
Incarnate Word is back in action on Thursday when they travel to Northwestern State for a 5:30 start.
