SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word will host their second Southland Conference basketball doubleheader in three days on Saturday when Oral Roberts comes to town. The women's game begins at 2 p.m. followed by the men's game at approximately 4 p.m. at the McDermott Center.
The UIW women are seeking to even up their conference record after a 60-40 loss on Thursday night to Central Arkansas. The Cardinals are 7-8 on the season and 1-2 in the SLC. They feature three players averaging at least 10 points per game with
Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) leading the way with 14.5 points per game. The team has had great success at the foul line this year connecting on 73.1 percent of their attempts while outscoring the opposition, 294-163.
The Golden Eagles have had a difficult schedule this year and are only 3-11 with a 2-2 mark in conference play. They have losses to the likes of Kansas, Arkansas, Navy, Missouri, Northwestern, Marquette and Nebraska. Christian Key leads the team with 13.3 points per game and Sarah Shelton is the top rebounder at 8.3 per contest. They are the reigning conference champions and were picked to finish second in the SLC this year.
The UIW men are fresh off an exciting 87-72 win in front of 1,386 fans on Thursday night against Central Arkansas. They have run their record to 14-2 matching last season's win total and they are 2-1 in the conference.
Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) and
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) have traded the scoring lead all season long and both are averaging over 18.0 points per game. Senior center
Ian Markolf (San Antonio/Churchill HS) pulled down 19 rebounds in the win over UCA and is second in the SLC with 8.8 per contest.
The Oral Roberts men have started conference play on the right foot winning three of their first four games and are 9-8 overall. They boast the leading scorer in the conference in Shawn Glover who puts in over 20 points per game. Head coach Scott Sutton is in his 15
th season at ORU and has led the Golden Eagles to three NCAA tournament and two NIT tournament appearances.
