Box Score NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – A 28-3 run encompassing the end of the first half and start of the second half keyed a 78-55win for the University of the Incarnate Word at Southland Conference rival New Orleans on Saturday at Lakefront Arena in men's basketball action.
The win was UIW's first-ever in the Southland Conference and first in three tries against NCAA Division I opponents this year. While the Cardinals (13-2, 1-1) won the game by a comfortable margin, the game did not begin very well.
The Cardinals found themselves trailing 25-19 with 8:45 remaining in the first half after a jumper by Tevin Broyles. The big run for UIW began with a layup by
Justin Philippe (Linden, NJ/Linden HS) and then two consecutive turnovers led to five more quick points and a lead the Cardinals would not relinquish. By halftime, the Cardinals led 37-27.
In the second half, the Privateers (4-8, 1-3) scored first on a free throw, but then the Cardinals went on a 10-0 run capped by a
Mitchell Badillo (Houston/Cy Falls HS) three-pointer with 15:10 to play to make it 47-28. New Orleans never got closer than 13 points the rest of the game.
The Cardinals got a big game from junior guard
Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) who poured in 29 points, dished out five assists and had four steals. He was 9-of-13 from the field and 8-for-8 at the foul line.
Overall, the Cardinals shot 50.9 percent from the field, made 9-of-19 three-point attempts and were 15-of-17 at the foul line.
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) had 19 points and five rebounds while
Sam Burmeister (San Antonio/Churchill HS) chipped in with 10 points. Badillo came off the bench and handed out nine assists while grabbing five rebounds and recording three steals. The team had 19 assists and 17 turnovers in the game.
The Privateers shot 38.0 percent from the field, made 6-of-17 from three-point range and were 11-of-21 at the charity stripe. Nate Frye led the team with 13 points and made all three of his three-point attempts. Kevin Hill led the team with nine rebounds while Terrance Syon had four blocks. They had eight assists and 25 turnovers as a team.
The Cardinals open up their Southland home schedule on Thursday at 7:30 against Central Arkansas.
