KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team travels to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Hubert Field.
The Cardinals (29-19, 12-11) and Javelinas (12-34, 2-21) met last week in San Antonio with UIW taking two games, 6-0 and 2-0. The first game on Tuesday will count as a Lone Star Conference game, while the second game with be considered a non-conference game.
The Cardinals are currently ranked fifth in the NCAA Division II South Central Region according to the first rankings that were released last week. They are hitting .295 as a team and lead the conference with a .972 fielding percentage.
Victoria Silva (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) and
Monica Acuna (San Antonio/Holmes HS) lead the offensive attack. Silva is hitting an even .400 with 21 RBI's and a .529 on-base percentage while Acuna is hitting .376 with 15 doubles and 35 runs batted in.
The Cardinals have a solid starting pitching duo of
Briana Sanchez (San Antonio/Marshall HS) and
Whitney Waltrip (Orangevale, CA/Casa Robles HS). Sanchez is 16-10 with a 2.41 ERA and a conference best 171 strikeouts. Waltrip is 12-8 with a 4.21 ERA and has tossed three shutouts on the season. The two have combined for four LSC Pitcher of the Week awards this year.
The Javelinas have struggled lately losing 23 of their last 25 games. Senior shortstop Rose Stubbs is the only member of the team hitting over .300 on the season with a .392 average and 13 steals. Adela Gomez provides the team with some power with 11 home runs and 41 runs batted in. Denise Arnold and Katrisha Arocha are the team's two starting pitchers. Arnold is 6-18 with a 4.30 ERA while Arocha is 6-15 with a 4.98 ERA.
