Senior Day Turns Sour

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team had high hopes for Senior Day, but #10 Texas Woman's University had different ideas.  The Pioneers (40-11, 18-5) won the final game of the Lone Star Conference series, 12-2 at Cardinals Field on Saturday. (Box Score)

The Cardinals (29-19, 12-11) had seven seniors honored prior to the game, but were unable to take the good feelings to the field.  TWU scored three times in the third inning and two more times in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead.

UIW scored their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Victoria Silva (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) hit an opposite field two-run homer to score Monica Acuna (San Antonio/Holmes HS) who had doubled to start the inning.

The game remained 5-2 until the sixth inning when the Pioneers scored seven times, including a grand slam by Katie Hines.  Six of the seven runs in the inning were unearned.

The Cardinals finished with six hits in the game.  Kim Hanson (Devine/Devine HS) went 2-for-2 with a walk and a double.  Briana Sanchez (San Antonio/Marshall HS) took the loss pitching a complete game and striking out five.

The Pioneers smacked three home runs in the game and had 12 hits overall.  Haley Colwell went 2-for-3 with two runs, three RBI's and a home run.  Larisa Garcia pitched 5.1 innings to earn the win.  She allowed six hits, two runs and one walk while striking out eight.

The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Texas A&M-Kingsville for a 5 p.m. doubleheader.  Only the first game will count in the conference standings.
