SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team will wrap up home play this weekend with a series against No. 10 and Lone Star Conference leader Texas Woman's. The Cardinals will get the series started with a doubleheader on Friday at noon and close out the series with a single game on Saturday at noon.
The Cardinals (29-16, 12-8) are looking to add another win to their record after sweeping LSC rival Texas A&M-Kingsville on Tuesday. The team is currently batting an even .300 for the season. Sophomore
Victoria Silva (San Antonio/Brandeis) leads the team in the category with a .419 batting average. Senior third baseman
Monica Acuna (San Antonio/Holmes) is a huge part of the Cardinal offense with a .376 batting average, 34 RBI's and 12 doubles.
Senior pitcher
Briana Sanchez (San Antonio/Marshall) has been a strong choice for the Cardinals on the mound. She picked up two big wins over West Texas A&M last week and added another one over A&M-Kingsville on Tuesday after being named the LSC Pitcher of the Week for the third time of the season. Sanchez (16-8) has dished out 163 strikeouts this season and has a 2.26 ERA.
The Pioneers (37-11, 15-5) are currently on top in the LSC standings, but are coming off 1-1 split with Tarleton State on Tuesday. Two Pioneers maintain a batting average over .400. Katie Hines leads TWU with a .429 batting average, 67 RBI's and 22 homeruns. Not far behind her is Bailey Vrazel with a .414 batting average and 53 runs.
Brandie Lander is TWU's favored pitcher. She has a 2.08 ERA and has allowed 45 walks and while striking out 107 this season. She is currently 17-5.
