SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team struggled to get clutch hits all Sunday afternoon, but they came through three times when they were down to their final out to pull off a 6-5 victory over visiting Lone Star Conference rival Eastern New Mexico in 10 innings at Sullivan Field. Box Score)
The Cardinals (25-15, 11-9) trailed the Greyhounds (19-20, 6-14), 4-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. They had left 14 runners on base through the first eight innings and after the first two batters made outs they were down to their last out.
Jason Stone (Georgetown/Georgetown HS) came through with a single up the middle and
Aaron Warren (San Antonio/Texas Southern) was sent on to pinch run.
Jonathan Armijo (San Antonio/Highlands HS) followed with a game-tying double to left field to send the game to extra innings.
The Greyhounds went back on top in the 10th inning. Colton Sims and Daniel Binz hit back-to-back singles after two outs were recorded and then advanced to second and third after a wild pitch. Pinch-hitter Derek Crenshaw hit the first pitch he saw to the third baseman and was mishandled allowing a run to score, but a heads up play by
Derrick Walls (San Antonio/Reagan HS) prevented a second run from scoring on the same play when he threw out Binz at home to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 10th inning,
Thomas Rinn (Cameron/Yoe HS) and
John Zule (San Antonio/Stevens HS) started it off with consecutive singles. After an out was recorded,
Adam Pena (Mission/Sharyland HS) walked to load the bases. With the infield playing in,
Lukas Miller (Boise/Timberlake HS) hit a grounder to the third baseman who got the force at home.
Jordan Scelfo (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe HS) was all the stood between the Greyhounds and a win. ENMU pitcher Ryan Pruitt quickly got ahead of Scelfo 0-2, but on the next pitch Scelfo hit a little blooper over the third baseman's head bringing in two runs and giving the Cardinals a 4-0 series sweep.
Freshman
Geno Encina (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) picked up his second extra-innings win in as many games for the Cardinals. He pitched the final 3.0 innings of the game allowing two hits, one unearned run and one walk while striking out one. He is now 7-5 on the season.
The Cardinals had 14 hits in the game, including four doubles. Rinn led the team with three hits while Walls, Zule, Pena and Stone each had two hits apiece.
The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. against St. Mary's at Wolff Stadium.
